Texas Converts on Penalty Kicks to Advance to Big 12 Semfinals
Nov. 7, 2007
SAN ANTONIO, Texas-- - In the third overtime match in as many games on the day, Texas converted on four of five penalty kicks to advance past No. 7 Colorado to the Big 12 Championship Semifinals after playing four scoreless periods. Texas had a chance to connect on a corner kick just inside the one minute mark of regulation as the ball got past the goalkeeper but were unable to connect. Both teams had plenty of opportunities in the first overtime to score. Colorado's Alex Cousins sent a long ball to Mel Hicks that went just over the cross bar. A few minutes later Longhorn Kelsey Carpenter broke away from the Buffalo defense and was only a few feet out from the goal when Colorado's Nikki Marshall caught up with her and sent the ball out of bounds. In the shoot out, Colorado's Kara Linder blocked the Longhorn's first penalty kick from Kasey Moore and Alex Cousin's capitalized on the Buffalo advantage putting the ball into the left corner of the net. Diana Pfenninger then saved Colorado's second attempt from Nikki Keller allowing Longhorn Niki Arlitt the opportunity to even out the score. Pfenninger blocked Colorado's sixth attempt and came on to connect on the next Texas shot, advancing the Longhorns to the Semifinals. No. 2 Texas will face the winner of the Kansas/Oklahoma State match at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9. Scoring summary: No. Time Team Goal scorer Assist Description
